INSTEAD OF GUN LAWS, WE NEED MORE JAILS

The editorial "Bush targets crime" predictably hails the provisions that promote gun control. Once again, The Buffalo News lauds the restrictions as "a step in the right direction." When will The News write an editorial that defines the final step in their agenda to infringe upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms?

The federal death penalty would be extended to cover murder committed with an automatic or semi-automatic weapon. Isn't a victim just as dead if he or she is slain by a single shot from some other type of weapon?

The simple truth is that bans on semi-automatic firearms and magazines will have no effect on criminal misuse. Penalties should be increased for the use of any weapon in the commission of a crime.

Spend the money to build more prisons. Simple mathematics shows that the cost of a national program to register semi-automatic firearms would cost between $3 million and $4 million, including investigative and administrative costs. We could build many jails and hire staff for this amount of money.
