The Holland School Board Tuesday night unanimously agreed to maintain "Dutchmen" as the nickname for district teams.
Several months ago, the Parent-Teacher Organization sponsored a school contest to determine if a new name was preferred. "Golden Wolves" was selected as the winner in that competition but numerous residents objected to the proposed change.
Recently, members of the community and middle and high school students were given the opportunity to choose between the two nicknames along with their logos.
More than 550 ballots were cast, Superintendent Peter Roswell told the board, and the vote was overwhelmingly for "Dutchmen"
Perhaps a mascot costumed like the Dutchman on the logo will be presented during next year's homecoming festivities, Roswell said.
In other business, the board gave a probationary appointment as high school physical education teacher to Carol Frank. For the past two years she has been a substitute teacher in Holland.
The next School Board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. June 13. At 8 p.m. that day, board members will address any questions the public has about the proposed budget. Voting will take place from 1 to 8 p.m. June. 14.
