A Genesee County grand jury has indicted Joseph Schlum, 26, of Batavia on second-degree murder charges in the 1987 slaying of a woman whose body was discovered in the crawl space of a motel two weeks ago.
Schlum is accused of killing Pamela Smith, 19. Her body was discovered beneath a room at the Friendly Motel in Batavia.
The jurors, in a report released Tuesday, also charged Schlum with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and menacing.
Schlum is being held without bail in Genesee County Jail, and will be arraigned later this week.
Public defender Fern K. Acomb received permission in City Court a week ago to have Schlum subjected to a psychiatric examination, which occurred late last week in Rochester.
