7 OCCUPANTS ESCAPE HERKIMER STREET FIRE

Seven people escaped unhurt early this morning from their burning Herkimer Street house, said fire Battalion Chief Ray Rott.

The residents -- occupants of two apartments -- were asleep when the fire began at 4:44 a.m., but safely made their way out of the burning 2 1/2 -story house at 107 Herkimer, fire officials said.

The fire spread from the first to the second floor, causing $30,000 damage before it was brought under control at 5:15 a.m., fire officials said. Investigators said the cause was faulty electrical wiring.
