REV. ALVIN S. MAHLMEISTER, EDUCATOR

A Mass of Christian Burial for the Rev. Alvin S. Mahlmeister, 81, a former administrator at Canisius College and High School, will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Michael's Church, 651 Washington St.

Father Mahlmeister died Sunday (May 28, 1989) in the Murray Weigel Jesuit Infirmary in the Bronx. Burial will be at Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville.

Born in Buffalo, Father Mahlmeister attended Our Lady of Sorrows school and Canisius College. He went on to Georgetown University's Woodstock College where he earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1933. In 1934 he earned his master's there.

He entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 7, 1927, in Milford, Ohio, and was ordained in Woodstock, Md., on June 23, 1940, by Archbishop Michael J. Curley.

Father Mahlmeister served as treasurer at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, a Jesuit Seminary in Poughkeepsie, from 1949-51; at Canisius College from 1951-53; and at Canisius High School from 1967 to 1969. He also taught at Canisius High School from 1970-71.

He also served as minister at Auriesville Retreat House and taught at the following institutions: St. Peter's High School, Jersey City, N.J.; Xavier High School, New York City; and at St. Andrew-on-Hudson.

Father Mahlmeister served as an assistant pastor at St. John the Evangelist Church from 1976-77 and as chaplain at Mercy Hospital from 1977 to 1981. He also served as a pastor, chaplain or administrator at the following churches and institutions: Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn; St. Hubert Church, Star Lake; St. Michael Church, Erie, Pa.; St. Vincent Hospital, Erie, Pa.; St. Bonaventure Church, Grampian, Pa.; and St. Jerome Hospital, Batavia.

He retired Sept. 22, 1982, while at Canisius College.

Surviving are four brothers, Robert of Mesa, Ariz., Francis of Reseda, Calif., Richard of Blasdell and Arnold of Gainsville, Fla., and a sister, Dorothy Rebman.
