Senior left-hander Dave Pyc pitched a no-hitter and struck out 18 Sunday as Maryvale blanked visiting Olean, 2-0, in a Section VI Class B-1 baseball quarterfinal.
Pyc, who walked five, set school records for strikeouts in a season (103) and career (216). He also added an RBI single to cap Maryvale's two-run sixth. Dave Roehmholdt's sacrifice scored Tony Hoerner with the first run. Pyc then plated Jim Werner with his hit.
Maryvale (15-1) advanced to meet either Seneca or Cheektowaga in the semifinals. Jim Robinson hurled a six-hitter for Olean, which finished 12-9.
Class B-2: Run-scoring singles by Doug Rohauer and Rod Delmonte in the top of the seventh sparked a three-run rally as Eden tripped City Honors, 4-2. The Raiders (11-9) got a solid pitching performance from left-hander Jeff Hine, who allowed five hits and fanned 11. Both City Honors runs scored on wild pitches.
Eden, which will host either Grover Cleveland or Riverside Wednesday, got a run in the third when Larry Schlifke stole home on the tail end of a double steal with Scott Overhoff. The winners' other tally came when Delmonte's single was misplayed for an error.
Msgr. Martin Assn.: League A champion O'Hara (11-5) blasted St. Francis, 9-1, for its 10th win in 12 games. Junior Scott Kocsis pushed his record to 4-0, and Henry Biggie and Tom Armento had two hits apiece for the Hawks, who scored six runs in the first inning. . . . Joe Rine had four hits, drove in three runs and scored twice as Canisius blasted Niagara Catholic, 11-3. Chad Pardee fanned six in five innings for the Crusaders (10-3).
