FUNDS SOUGHT FOR CHEEKTOWAGA MONUMENT

Contributions of nearly $1,000 have been received to build a veterans monument for which a Cheektowaga citizens committee hopes to raise $53,000.

The Veterans Memorial Committee, headed by Joseph W. Lipowski and George Ross, hopes to have the monument completed -- probably in Cheektowaga Town Park -- by Veterans Day.

The town has authorized borrowing for the project so that work on the monument can begin soon, but the committee hopes to raise the needed funds through donations.

The design, by Ralph Sirianni, a Town of Tonawanda artist, features a backdrop in the shape of a mountain with a sun rising over its heights and a World War I soldier with his arm out-Cannot distribute vertically stretched to a child.

Councilman Leo T. Kazukiewicz, the Town Board representative on the committee, said the first donations were made by the St. Ann's Ladies Sodality of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Pine Hill Home Bureau. A fund-raiser at the Leo Donovan American Legion Post raised $346.
