tonight's activities at Darien Lake Theme Park. For a mere 97 cents, they're offering a concert at 7:30 p.m. by Southern rockers Molly Hatchet in the Lakeside Amphitheater and admission to all the rides from 6 to 10 p.m. Ticket sales are limited to the 8,500 capacity of the amphitheater, which explains why some 500 people were lined up in the rain earlier this week at the Darien Lake box office.
Even more amazing than the bargain price is how quickly it was organized. Tom McGill of Starstruck Productions had long been bidding for a Molly Hatchet show and suddenly got one last Friday when a Rochester date fell through.
"I was on the phone from 5 p.m. last Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday morning trying to put this thing together," McGill relates. "I got 97 Rock (WGR-FM) in Buffalo and WCMF in Rochester to co-sponsor it, Darien Lake is opening the rides and hopefully it will all pay off. We're doing a few shows at Darien this summer and I'd been looking for something to start off the season. This is it."
