ROBERT CRAIG IS APPOINTED TO LOCKPORT COUNCIL SEAT

Robert H. Craig, 60, of 388 Washburn St., controller at Lockport Memorial Hospital, has been named 3rd Ward alderman to succeed the late John T. Whitmore.

City Clerk Richard P. Mullaney said the appointment of Craig, a Republican, was made Thursday "in absentia" by GOP Mayor Raymond H. Betsch, who was to return from a Caribbean vacation late today. Craig, a Lockport native, will fill out the unexpired term of Whitmore, 68, Republican, who died May 16 after an extended illness.

Craig ran unsuccessfully for the Council seat eight years ago, opposing former councilman Bradley Erck. The post carries a $5,500 salary.

All seats on the Council expire Dec. 31 and Whitmore had been unopposed for a third two-year term. Craig will fill out the remainder of the term and be required to circulate designating petitions for the Nov. 7 general election between June 6 and July 13.

Craig is a graduate of Lockport High School and Niagara University.
