Leona Skowron, 61, president of the Rosary and Altar Society at Prince of Peace Catholic Church for the last eight years, died Thursday (May 25, 1989) in her 74th Street home on after a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, Mrs. Skowron was this year's recipient of the St. Joseph's Award for outstanding volunteer work at Prince of Peace, where she was a eucharistic minister, bingo worker and religious education teacher.
She was a secretary for the Niagara County Social Services Department until 1982.
The former Leona Tyran also was a past president of Catholic War Veterans Post 925 of Niagara Falls and was active for many years in the Women's Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans.
Her husband, Thaddeus Skowron, a disabled veteran, died in 1972.
Survivors include three daughters, Lydia Stang of Clarence Center, Christine Kusk and Margaret; a son, Thaddeus Skowron of Lockport; a brother, Chester Tyran of Pennsylvania; a sister, Wanda Horning of North Tonawanda, and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in Prince of Peace Church, 1055 N. Military Road, after prayers at 9:30 in the Lane Funeral Home, 8622 Buffalo Ave. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston.
