A Common Council task force today endorsed a $39 million renovation project at Memorial Auditorium.
The task force, headed by Majority Leader James W. Pitts, approved and sent to the full Council:
The renovation plan developed last year by Hellmuth Obata and Kassbaum Inc. of Kansas City, with a lengthening of the ice surface to National Hockey League standards as an extra component.
The plan also has been amended so that architects will study the feasibility of adding such features as new dasherboards, added medical facilities, overhaul of the ice-making plant, asbestos removal and removal of a chimney stack so there can be 100 more seats.
A financing plan that envisions major help from the state's Urban Development Corp. and from revenue bonds issued by the Erie County Industrial Development Corp. The city's share would be slightly more than $4 million.
