Paul Cartone smacked a two-run homer and sophomore Brian Ross had two doubles, a single and two RBIs as Cardinal O'Hara clinched the Msgr. Martin Association's League A title for the second straight year Wednesday with a 10-6 victory over host DeSales.
Four pitchers combined to limit DeSales to three hits as the Hawks improved to 6-0.
Rob Reyes pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight, as Williamsville South (15-1) wrapped up the ECIC Division III title by dealing Springville (13-3) a 6-1 loss. Bert Reyes (two RBIs) and Joe Guarino each had two hits for the Billies, while Ted Gistui's double keyed a three-run third inning.
Eric Novosat pitched a four-hitter and Mike Snopkowski broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run homer as North Tonawanda (8-2) beat LaSalle, 7-2, to clinch a share of the Niagara Frontier League title with Kenmore East.
Msgr. Martin: Canisius (9-2) moved into first place in League AA, .032 percentage points ahead of Timon, by edging the Tigers, 2-1, behind the five-hit, nine-strikeout pitching of junior Phil Ganci. Loser Joe Fahey also allowed five hits, but one was a two-run double by Joe Basile in the first inning. . . . Turner/Carroll's Tom Lewandowski recorded his first win after three losses, spacing eight hits as the Chargers (4-7) nipped St. Joe's, 3-2, to drop the Marauders (8-4) to third place. Carl Camarto's second hit drove in the winning run after two were out in the sixth.
ECIC I: Frontier (10-4) clinched second place by edging champion Orchard Park, 5-4. Jim Kramer's two-run single in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie and made a winner of reliever Mike LaRosa, who held the Quakers (13-2) to three hits over the last five innings. Leo Eckman had a homer, double and single for Frontier.
ECIC II: Andy Eckert singled twice and was driven in after each by Bruce Axelson as Williamsville East (10-6), behind Dave Solazzo's four-hitter, blanked Clarence, 2-0, to clinch second place. Clarence (6-9) rebounded to beat Depew, 4-1, behind Jeff Bass' three-hitter. Earlier, Depew (5-11) defeated Pioneer, 4-1, on Todd Billo's two-hitter.
ECIC III: Tom Kramer's three-run double backed the seven-hit pitching of Doug Klein as Springville (13-3) rallied to edge John F. Kennedy, 5-4. . . . Sophomore Eric Yax, called up from the junior varsity, pitched a complete game and his brother, senior Mike Yax, drove in three runs with a triple and double to lead Alden (11-5) in a 12-1 rout of Holland. . . . Larry Tanner had two doubles, a single and four RBIs, backing the combined two-hit, 10-strikeout pitching of Scott Overhoff and Pat Doyle as Eden (10-6) crushed Holland, 10-3.
Niagara Frontier: Dennis Sobieraski pitched a six-hitter and singled home the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as Lockport (7-3) knocked Niagara-Wheatfield out of the sectional playoffs with a 4-3 victory. Bo Villant had three hits for Niagara-Wheatfield (5-5).
Cornell Cup: Kevin Kapalczynski pitched a five-hitter and Scott Pokornowski backed him by knocking in three runs with a double and single as Seneca (7-2) shut out Lafayette, 7-0.
