GROUP SAYS JAPAN DUMPING STEEL PIPE, TUBES ON U.S. MARKET

The Specialty Tubing Group, an association of domestic producers of seamless and welded stainless steel pipe and tube, charged Wednesday that Japanese welded stainless pipe and tube currently is being "dumped" in the United States at prices less than market price.

One of the members of the association is the Tech Speciality Steel Corp. of Dunkirk.

According to the U.S. manufacturers, the Japanese producers have failed to increase the price of their products in the U.S. in accord with the appreciation of the yen.

"It is crucial to the survival of the industry that the current Voluntary Restraint Arrangement we have with Japan be extended to cover stainless steel pipe and tube," said David A. Harquest, legal counsel and spokesman for the association.
