17-year-old girl was rescued from an attacking pit bull in a an upper apartment on Leon-New Albion Road about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday by a Chautauqua County sheriff's deputy who responded to a call of a dog attack at the location.
The deputy found the dog mauling the girl in a bedroom and in turn was attacked by the canine when he went to her rescue. But he was able to fight off the animal and rescue the girl from the apartment, locking the dog in it.
The girl, identified as Nancy Cuddington, was taken to Tri-County Hospital in Gowanda, where she was treated for multiple puncture wounds and a severely injured left arm.
The dog was placed in the care of a local veterinarian for examination. The girl lives in the apartment with her parents, deputies said. An investigation is continuing.
