AMHERST PUTS ACCENT ON SAFETY

Amherst School Board members intend to intensify the district's efforts to keep its buildings safe from fires.

The board Tuesday accepted the annual fire inspection report, and expressed a desire to have staff members alerted to the importance of proper posting of fire escape routes and escape windows.

The board also directed administrators to initiate in-house inspections each six months.

The district conducts its own safety inspection each September, said Assistant Superintendent Robert L. Eicher, in addition to that done by state-certified inspectors.

"We pay a great deal of attention to this (inspection report)," he said. "We don't want a disaster of any sort."

The board is also considering changing its biweekly meetings to the first and third Tuesdays of the month.

This may be done only if the Orchard Park district also makes the move to accommodate a request by the Erie County School Boards Association to have one night a week available when school board members countywide could attend special meetings.

The Amherst board now meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

In other business, the board recognized Amherst seniors Peter Stone, Stephen Servoss and Joshua Mensch, who were chosen to attend the recent Erie and Niagara Scholastic Achievement dinner.

Three other district students, Jason Miller, Joel Swing and Paul Trask, have been chosen to be among those representing New York State at the Region VII U.S. Gymnastic Federation competition June 2 through 4 at the University at Buffalo. The event will include more than 500 of the top young gymnasts from the eastern United States.
