A Mass of Christian Burial for Francis T. Sheehy, 85, a former superintendent for the state Labor Department in the Buffalo region, will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Edmund's Catholic Church, 530 Ellicott Creek Road, Town of Tonawanda.
Prayers will precede the Mass at 9:15 in the Tonawanda Chapel of the Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Sheehy died Saturday (May 20, 1989) in his Town of Tonawanda home after a short illness.
Born in Utica, Sheehy was raised in Syracuse and attended schools there.
He was a star halfback for Niagara University's football team and graduated in 1927 with a degree in business.
From 1927 to 1934, he coached football at the Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. In 1929, he began his career with the Labor Department as an interviewer.
Sheehy was promoted to office manager and transferred to Dunkirk in 1939. In 1942 he became office manager in Niagara Falls, then was transferred to Buffalo, where he was office manager from 1944 to 1968.
He served as superintendent of employment security in the Buffalo region from 1969 until his retirement in 1973.
Sheehy was a member and past state president of the International Association of Personnel and Employment Security.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine, and a daughter, Joan Schlee, both of the Town of Tonawanda; a son, James of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
